Quinta do Lagar - Apresentação
Presentation

- Casa do Prior

- Casa do Moleiro

- Casa do Mestre do Lagar

- Casa do Outeirinho

At Carregueira parish, Chamusca district, where the charneca (the moor) meets the valley at the Tejo Norte (Northern Tagus), distant just a few kilometres of Castelo de Almourol (Almourol Castle), the visitor will find this Espaço Rural Ribatejano (Rural Property of Ribatejo), a dwelling place associated to a farm covering more than 40 ha, divided among different areas. There the visitor can find many modern forms of work mixed with more old ones.

This Rural Property, covering about 7ha, bears the name of Quinta do Lagar (Lagar Farm). Lagar was a stone tank where olives were pressed. Later on a building was needed to contain all the proper machinery to crush olives to produce olive oil.
Today this Espaço Rural is a farmland, devoted to the production of crops. But their owners decided to implement three more centres to complete this farming activity. So they developed a Quinta Pedagógica (Pedagogical Farm), a Hospedaria Rural (Rural Residence) and a Núcleo Museológico (Museum Area), different areas exhibiting interesting objects connected with nature and history of farming.

The Quinta Pedagógica is located in an area where the activities of a kitchen garden are experienced. Moreover these activities aim at presenting the last hundred years kitchen garden history, in the agricultural life of a traditional farm in Ribatejo.

Hospedaria Rural provides comfortable lodgings, and it is the result of an intelligent and successful reconstruction of a number of small and old cottages that are located in the adjoining area of the farm.
Each small cottage still bears its name of 19th. Century designation.

- Casa do Prior (House of the Priest)

It is said that the first owner of Lagar Farm was a priest, who inhabited this traditional 19th. Century cottage. Nowadays its refurbishment provided the possibility of building two bedrooms, one blue and the other pink, served by private bathrooms. There is a comfortable lounge adjoining the fully equipped kitchen. Here the visitor is surprised by the authentic, huge fireplace, large enough to roast a whole animal. It is the jewel of Lagar Farm.

- Casa do Moleiro (House of the Miller)

The old building where the milling process of the grains took place has been turned into a modern room (marigold room) and bathroom. There, the visitor is able to rest in the sitting room, enjoying the warmth of a nice, authentic fireplace.

- Casa do Mestre do Lagar (House of the Foreman of the Lagar)

This was the building where the tanks full of olives waiting to be crushed were kept. Three bedrooms were built, each one bearing the name of a flower- daisy, pansy, and magnolia rooms - with individual, private bathrooms. Breakfast is served in a large lounge. A real fireplace is large enough to warm the whole room. All these rooms open to the garden and the visitors may enjoy the pleasure of watching fine grass and beautiful flowers.

- Casa do Outeirinho (Outeirinho House)

Completely new, fully equiped detached house, consisting on kitchen, two bedrooms, a living room with a
fireplace, one bathroom and a small room with a window, where it is possible to put single bed. The bedrooms
are individually used but, the other rooms, are shared by all the tenants. It is located by itself, in an independent
area, within, aproximatelly, thirty meters distance of the other buildings of the farm.

The Museum Centre is located in various areas: in the old building where the wood-burning furnace, next to the Casa do Prior, was situated; in the building next to the Casa do Moleiro, where previously was the machinery of the milling; and in another building where until recently the Lagar was still at work.
The visitor can enjoy watching farm animals.
The visitor can also enjoy a refreshing swim in the pool as well as walk around the gardens. Our visitors are invited to get away from the bustle for a few days. The Lagar Farm is the ideal place to relax, discovering the pleasure of contemplation in the quiet beauty and peace of the country.
